James Hollis Lander, “Jim”, 71, of Galena, died March 25, 2018 in his home.
Jim was born in Freeport, Il on June 14, 1946, the son of Hollis W. and Elizabeth Pankhurst Lander. A U.S. Army veteran, Jim served in Vietnam. The family moved to Corpus Christi, TX, in 1949, returned to Freeport and lived in Mineral Point, WI until moving to Galena. Jim has lived in Galena since 1952 except for Army duty and attending and graduating from Illinois State University in Normal with a degree in Mathematics. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. Jim has been involved in many church capacities; most notably the Kenya project where he participated in a missionary trip with 14 volunteers. Beginning in 1971, Jim worked at Mercy Health Center in Dubuque assigned to cover 2 medical libraries. He became a supervisor as the library evolved into the Anthony C. Pfohl Health Science Library. He retired in 2011. Over the years he has been involved on the Jo Daviess County Board of Health, Save Turner Hall Committee, Library Board, and the Executive Board of the Midwest Medical Association serving as President of the nine state chapter, the largest in the nation. He continued to work after retirement as a tour guide at the Belvidere Mansion. Jim loved to garden and always had a dog usually a black Scottie (Duncan). Survivors include a brother Jon and his wife Brenda, a nephew Randy and his wife Suzanne all of Austin, TX, a niece, Wendy Lander Pedersen and her husband Doug of Excelsior, MN, a very close cousin, Helen “Skip” Johnson of Oregon, Il, and several other cousins, second cousins, and 3 great nephews and a great niece.
Services will be at 10:30 am on April 3rd at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James McCrea officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, Oregon IL, later that same day. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Miller and Steinke Galena Chapels on Monday, April 2nd.
